Be honest, you thought I gave up, didn’t you? I made the claim that I was going to play professional football in Vietnam a couple of weeks ago. Since then, I’ve embarked on a half-serious training programme that has seen me go swimming regularly which is a killer, believe me. This week I’ve been in the central city of Tam Ky to cover a women’s volleyball tournament, yet I wasn’t going to let that stand in my way. A swimming pool was a minimum requirement when I was looking at hotels. To be fair, I played it well, a massive outdoor pool that I haven’t seen anyone else use and my nine nights is approaching the end.

Write, Swim, Volleyball Repeat

Vietnamese people don’t like the sun you see, and because Tam Ky isn’t exactly a hub of activity, there’s not (m)any tourists. Works well for me, it’s sort of been a detox week away from a lot of creature comforts which is exactly what the doctor ordered if I’m ever going to make it as a footballer. My days have gone a little like this – morning: write, early afternoon: swim, late afternoon/evening: volleyball, late evening: write. What a life, eh?

One of the issues I am going to encounter which crossed my mind on the way back from the beach (ha!) earlier was football boots. That happens to me, you see. I can be in the middle of something and a random thought can click in my mind. Football boots! It’s going to be a fucking nightmare to find a pair of boots that fit me over here and the postal service is horrendous so I’m not sure what the best plan of attack is. I’ll sort it. No drama.

Does Anything Compare To Football?

Next week my plan is to go football training. That’s the next rung of the ladder, having a ball out my feet on a regular basis. Does anything actually compare to football? I for one, don’t think so. Where I’m going to go football training, I am not so sure. I can’t exactly rock up at Long An’s stadium and just join in. Especially not without any boots or shinpads. Decisions, decisions.

Finally, I’m not sure if I touched on this last time or not, anyway, I’m still debating what position I should aim for. I’m a central player, bar up top. Now, I can play in defence, however, it would have to be in a team that plays a deep line because I am not fast. Never have been, never will be. So if I end up against anybody with a turn of pace, I am well and truly fucked.

Alternatively, I could ping balls about for fun in the middle of the park. Snap at a few ankles. That’s the dream. I’ve been watching Ruben Neves all season so I should have half an idea of what I’m doing.

A Big Ta Very Much To The People Of Tam Ky

In closing (I know I said finally last time), football training is the next step. When they see me with a ball at my feet they’ll be spellbound. Everyone will be. Also, because I know the people of Tam Ky will read this in their masses, I want to say a massive ta very much for your hospitality this week.  I’ll be sure to return in the not too distant future.

PS – There will be no betting piece this week as the hotel WiFi doesn’t let me on Bet365, that’ll be back next week.

Until the next time.
